Valerius Romulus coins

It may seem arbitrary that I removed Category:Coins of Valerius Romulus from Category:Ancient Roman coins by subject. When I made the edit, I hadn't noticed that the category was added by a longtime contributor in classical studies, so I thought I should leave a note in addition to my rambling edit note.

As I'm sure you know, there are literally hundreds of individual humans depicted on Roman coins, and if we started listing them all in this main cat, the category would become unusable. I recently went through and created a couple of "corral" categories for Roman legendary history topics and the military on coins, because whenever I needed a subject cat, it was tedious to read through them all. Adding the countless names of individuals, likely to be alphabetized in random ways by different users, would soon overwhelm the main cat and make it look like an index of names. Category:Antinous on coins is arguably a special case, as Antinous is a widespread subject of art and iconography, but then there's the vague and non-idiomatically named Category:Divus roman emperor on coins — I'm not even sure what the scope of the latter might be. Coins that depict any emperor who was divus, or coins actually inscribed DIVUS?

Anyway, a solution might be Category:People on ancient Roman coins, or some such. But I'm not such a masochist that I would take that on. I occasionally and timidly start little categories on some aspect of imperial portraiture on coins, and then don't really know where to put them most accessibly. I don't find it useful to bury coins only under a "reliefs" category, because coins function differently. So I'm not entirely sure what I'm grasping at. Cynwolfe (talk) 19:47, 3 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
